Crisis Ministries provides food, shelter and hope to Charleston's most vulnerable citizens. This could not be possible without the support of the community. Donate now and be a part of the solution to end homelessness one person at a time, one family at a time.
Learn moreCrisis Ministries was established in 1984, but what began as a warm meal and volunteer-staffed shelter has evolved into a comprehensive service agency dedicated to helping families and individuals end their homelessness. Learn moreEvery fourth Monday of the month Essex Village Church of Christ prepares a Tex Mex
meal for over 200 hungry guests who eat at the Crisis Ministries Soup Kitchen. On Monday, March 22nd, volunteers Raymond Boynton, Donna Bryant, Barbara Lemieux, Janie Polutta, Rick Porter and their preacher Stefano Mugnaini, all helped prepare and serve the meal.
Our Director of Food Services , Mike Barnes, said that we have groups who purchase breakfast food and dinner food for 35-85 guests but it is very rare when we have a group such as Essex Village that purchases enough food to feed all 200 people who are served during lunch. Their signature dish is a Tex Mex entre including mixed elbow macaroni, tomatoes, beef, and cheese. It was served along with a side of broccoli, black eyed peas, bread, rice, and dessert.
One of the volunteers, Janie Bolutta, is 71 years old and made a career as a lawyer for 40 yrs. Janie decided to retire in Charleston and has since made it a priority to give back by coming out every month. She is credited by the current group leader Raymond, as being the "true organizer of the group" and he has been "learning from her all along." Janie has volunteered with Essex Villiage for 11 years and had the privilege to work beside Mary Beth Christy who originally helped get Essex get involved with Crisis Ministries over 25 years ago.
Crisis Ministries thanks Essex Village for their overwhelming dedication to helping hungry individuals all of these years.
