HELP Center

Issue:

  • 34.8% to 40% of adults age 25 and older in Charleston and Dorchester Counties do not have a high school diploma or GED; the number in Berkeley County is 32.5%-34.8%
  • When the Urban Institute investigated the education of homeless people nationally, it found that 38% had less than a high school diploma.
  • In 2008, approximately 58% of clients entering the shelter did not have a high school diploma or GED
  • It takes 50 – 60 hours of instruction to move one grade level.

Response:

The HELP Center provides the following services in one location, in a continuum of care, thus reducing barriers to self-sufficiency.

  • Job readiness assessments; application and resume writing
  • Targeted job search; Interviewing skills; Job retention strategies
  • SC Workforce Readiness training and certification
  • GED readiness assessment, classes and testing; Adult Basic Education

Success at Crisis Ministries:

  • In 2009, Crisis Ministries assisted over 60 people in finding meaningful employment.
  • 5 people got their GED
  • Tim Klinner received his GED through the HELP Center and received his diploma in December.  Another recent graduate will get his diploma in the spring ceremony.
  • Renovation work has begun at 559 Meeting Street and we are on track to move the HELP Center and all of our education and employment programs into that space in April.
